Our staff at the Electoral Education Centre in Perth, in conjunction with the Constitutional Centre and Australia Day Council WA, have been busy planning and running civics and citizenship workshops to help people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse backgrounds learn about the Australian political system (and how to impact it).

The next workshop is planned for Tuesday, 6 February at 6pm. Bookings are essential. For more information, or to make a booking, visit the event page.

A year of electoral records...

2017 has been a big year for the Commission with both the March State general election and the October local government ordinary elections breaking all sorts of records. In addition, the Commission has conducted numerous other elections and provided early voting services for elections in other jurisdictions, including New Zealand.

The State election involved 16 registered political parties and a total of 717 candidates, compared with just 7 parties and 456 candidates at the 2013 election. Over 200,000 more electors voted in comparison to the previous election.

Local Government Elections – 21 October 2017

The results of all contested ballots for the 89 local governments where elections were conducted by the WA Electoral Commission were declared on Saturday night.

Record numbers were set at these elections across a number of fronts – including the total enrolment, the number of postal vote packages distributed, the number of candidates who nominated and the participation rates recorded at many local governments.

2017 LGE Final Results

Final results in the local government elections being run by the WAEC have been entered for the night.

This year’s elections have been characterised by a significant improvement in participation rates by both candidates and electors. In addition, a number of very close results and ties necessitated quite a few recounts.

Congratulations to all successful candidates and to everyone who nominated.
