Not too late to vote in the 2019 Local Government elections

Media Release Date
Friday, 18 October, 2019

Acting Electoral Commissioner Chris Avent has reminded electors that there is still time to vote in the 2019 local government elections.

Electors who have yet to vote can still do so, by dropping their envelopes into their local council office during normal business hours today, or tomorrow Saturday 19 October between the hours of 8.00 am and 6.00 pm.  Completed postal vote packages mailed at this late stage will not make it in time to be counted.

Mr Avent advised any electors who may have mislaid their postal vote package to call in to their council office and apply for a replacement package which can be issued on the spot.

“The important thing is to get out there and have your say on who will be governing your local community”, Mr Avent said.

“Local government decision making impacts on our everyday life in so many ways.”

Results of the local government elections will be posted on the Electoral Commission’s website www.elections.wa.gov.au throughout Saturday evening.

Information for media

Results will be posted progressively to the website council by council throughout Saturday evening at https://www.elections.wa.gov.au/elections/local/election#/ .

Unlike State elections, the votes for each local government district will be counted in a single batch at the local council office, rather than at a series of smaller polling places.  It can therefore take longer for the final result to become known in each election, and quite a few hours in the case of larger councils with many thousands of votes to be counted.

We are not able to predict the time that specific results will be available but they should start to appear on our website from about 7.00 pm onwards for the smaller councils.

The media mailbox will be monitored throughout Saturday 19 October and intermittently on Sunday 20 October 2019.
