With nominations having opened for the forthcoming Local Government elections, Electoral Commissioner David Kerslake is urging Western Australians to consider standing for their local council.
“The Commission is pleased by the number of councils who have entrusted us with running their elections, and we will be even more pleased to see an increase in the number of candidate nominations”, Mr Kerslake said.
All 139 Western Australian councils go to the polls in October, with the Western Australian Electoral Commission responsible for running 89 of those.
There are numerous vacancies for both councillor and mayoral positions across the state, 448 just in the elections conducted by the Commission.
“Local governments make important decisions and are the area of government that is closest to all of us”, Mr Kerslake said.
He said that he is especially keen to encourage a broad cross section of the community to contest the elections.
Nominations close at 4.00 p.m. on Thursday 14 September.
