Mobile Polling at Special Institutions & How to Vote Cards (s.192)
In accordance with the Electoral Act, party and candidate campaign workers are not able to enter or canvass for votes within 6m of the entrance or grounds of a Gazetted special institution (eg. hospital, prison or aged care facility), nor follow a mobile polling team when providing polling services at such special institutions in order to hand out how to vote material. Typically, candidates and parties can leave how to vote cards with the venue administrator for access on request by interested electors. Mobile polling officials are unable to carry or present how to vote material to electors.
A formally appointed scrutineer may accompany a mobile portable ballot box and may distribute how to vote material to electors recording their vote at that ballot box where requested. However, the number of scrutineers accompanying a mobile portable ballot box must not disrupt normal operations at the venue, intimidate patients or residents, present a potential health and safety issue or disrupt the vote issuing process.
Remote Polling
The Commission aims to publish the dates and times for remote mobile polling visits in the four Mining and Pastoral districts on our website by Wednesday next week (15/2/17).
The four ROs involved have developed their proposed visit dates/times but are awaiting confirmation from some communities before they can be locked in. Remote polling can commence from Saturday 25 February.
Given weather conditions and heavy rains in the north of late, it is planned to undertake most remote visits in the Kimberley, Pilbara and Northwest Central districts in the first week of mobile polling – in case changes need to be made due to weather and access issues. Kalgoorlie visits are planned for the second week.
