The starter’s gun has been fired. The 2017 State general election is well and truly up and running.
Candidate nominations are now open and close at 12.00 noon Friday 10 February.
Electoral Commissioner, David Kerslake said that a record number of registered political parties will contest the election.
“At the 2013 general election there were just seven registered parties. This has now increased to 16. No doubt there will be a corresponding significant increase in the number of candidates nominating at this election”, he said.
Participation by electors is also likely to be at record levels, with almost 1.6 million electors now enrolled to vote.
“This is the highest enrolment level ever recorded, around 200,000 more than were eligible to vote in the 2013 State election”, Mr Kerslake said.
However the Electoral Commission is not stopping there and Mr Kerslake has called on all Western Australians to check that they are correctly enrolled.
Individual enrolment details can be checked and updated online at www.elections.wa.gov.au Enrolment forms are also available at local post offices.
The Electoral Roll closes at 6 p.m. on Thursday 9 February.
