Last chance to enrol

With the electoral roll closing at 6.00 pm tomorrow (Thursday 9 February), Electoral Commissioner David Kerslake is urging Western Australians to ensure that their electoral enrolment is up to date.

“You forego all right to complain about government decisions if you don’t join in”, Mr Kerslake said.

“If anyone is uncertain about their enrolment, it is easy to check and make sure it is up to date.  Equally, if you have only just turned 18 or moved house in the past month or so, it is not too late to get on the roll”, he said. “

With a decline in participation within the 18-25 year age group in recent years, Electoral Commissioner David Kerslake is especially keen to encourage younger electors to have their say.

“Some young people question whether their vote will really make a difference but with some seats decided by only a handful of votes at past elections, pretty obviously it can”, Mr Kerslake said.

He also reminded anyone needing to vote by post that applications are now open.

“If you need to vote by post it’s a good idea to get your application in now and we’ll have it processed and ready to go once ballot papers are available.  The easiest way is to lodge your application directly on our website”, Mr Kerslake said.

Electors can enrol, update their address details or apply for a postal vote at www.elections.wa.gov.au  Postal vote application forms are also available at local post offices or by calling the election helpline at 136 306.

Election Day is Saturday 11 March.
