Enrol to vote or don't complain

With the State election fast approaching, the Western Australian Electoral Commission’s enrolment drive is now in full swing.

Already the number of enrolled Western Australians has topped the 1.6 million mark, the highest ever, but that is not enough to satisfy Electoral Commissioner David Kerslake.

“The electoral roll closes on 9 February, so anyone who still needs to enrol or update their address details is fast running out of time”, Mr Kerslake said.

The theme for the Commission’s election advertising is quite simple.

“It’s pretty simple: don’t vote, then don’t complain.  If you aren’t enrolled and don’t vote, then you forfeit the right to grumble if government decisions are not to your liking”, he said.

Anyone needing to enrol or update their details can do so on the Commission’s website

For the remainder of this week the Commission has also set up an enrolment tent in the Murray Street mall in the Perth CBD.

“Just take some ID with you and we can update your enrolment on the spot”, Mr Kerslake said.
